Kavuni Rice

Kavuni Rice is unique to the Chettinad region in Tamil Nadu. It shows the links of Chettiar community with Burma. This black rice existed across South East Asian cultures. It is very rich in Iron and Vitamin E. The bran of black rice has the highest levels of anthocyanin antioxidants than any other food (even more than blueberries). A simple rice pudding (the rice is soaked overnight, pressure cooked and tossed in ghee, sugar and a hint of cardamom) is a popular Chettinad dessert. Black rice can be prepared like any other types of rice and can be added to a variety of savory and sweet dishes. Black rice is best for antioxidant activity and contains more protein than brown rice. The use of Kavuni Rice provides several health benefits including boosting eye and heart health, protecting against certain forms of cancer and aiding weight loss.
